Woden Valley Community Festival Program 2009

The festival's theme is:
Healthy Communities, Positive Wellbeing and Sustainable Lifestyles. The aim to build a healthier and happier Woden community!

The festival will be a one day celebration held in Eddison Park (off Launceston St, Phillip) on Saturday 31 October 2009 from 10.00am to 6.00pm.

It will be an opportunity for local community groups and businesses to showcase their contribution to Woden, as well as a chance for people, who live, work or have a connection to the area to celebrate what it means to be part of this community.

Activities and entertainment will be provided for all ages and the festival will be a child friendly event. As much as possible all activities will either be free or at low cost.

ABC crosses starting 8.30am - Street soccer match 11.30am - Mascot race 12 noon

Activities and events proposed as of September 10 include:

Children and Family Activities

  • Fun sport and fitness activities
  • Arts and craft, face painting
  • Jumping castle and rides
  • Tethered balloon rides
  • Kids at Play
  • Disc golf come and try
  • Mascots and mascot race
  • Police horses

Southern Cross Health Club’s Health and Fitness Village

  • Fitness checks
  • Fitness equipment to try e.g. weights - under professional supervision
  • Fitness competitions e.g. sit-ups, push-ups etc
  • Showcasing of local sports groups

Celebrity Street Soccer challenge

  • A celebrity team versus The Big Issue team (This fast and fun game is played on a small field)

Community Entertainment Live Music and Performances (10am to 3pm)

  • This stage will be the focus of the entertainment at the festival
  • Welcome to country from Ngunnawal elder and indigenous dance performance
  • Michael Milton - Key Inspirational Wellbeing Speaker
  • Bands and other entertainers
  • Community groups to display their talents for example local martial arts and dancing groups
  • Multicultural performances and traditional dancers eg salsa

Community Display Area on the Grass

  • Tai Kwon Do, Canberra Babywearers Sling Dance, Cheer leading, Dance displays, PCYC Judo and wrestling.

Activities for seniors

  • Capital Chinese Medicine Tai Chi display

Youth Village

  • Skating demonstration, free skating, bmx display - to be confirmed
  • Youth Entertainment Stage (3pm to 6pm) - Lift Off 09 youth performance competition finale (bands and soloist performances)
  • Hip Hop Dance Off

Positive Wellbeing Village

  • Try out a range of alternative therapies - Massage, Yoga, Other healing modalities
  • Workshop tent
  • Wellbeing workshops
  • Health talks
  • Dru Yoga

Hindmarsh Sustainable Living Expo

  • Stalls
  • Sustainable schools display
  • Preview of the new electric car to be launched next year
  • Hybrid police car
  • Food Fair
  • Multicultural food and healthy delights

Market Stalls

  • Jewellery, art and craft and fresh produce

Community Information Stalls

  • Offering information on the many organisations, groups and activities happening in and around the Woden Valley
  • Includes demonstrations and workshops from local groups
  • Police forensic display
  • Water Police Boat
  • Live Music and performances

Live music and performances will be over two stages

Formal Ceremonies and presentations

  • Opening Ceremony - The opening ceremony will include recognition of the traditional owners of the land, an indigenous welcoming ceremony, the lighting of the World Peace Flame, music and performance artists. It will be concluded with an official opening by VIP guests
  • Michael Milton Keynote Talk - Inspirational health and wellbeing speaker- To inspire Woden Valley residents to further embrace the concepts of health, wellbeing and sustainability
  • Unsung Heroes - Recognition of people and/or groups that have contributed to the Woden Valley community (nominations received and collated prior to the festival, presentation on the day)
  • Lady and/or Lord of the Lake - the crowning of a community figure
  • Unsung Heroes - Recognition of people and/or groups that have contributed to the Woden Valley community (nominations received and collated prior to the festival, presentation on the day)
  • Lady/Lord of the Lake - the crowning of a woman or man of Woden Valley who has made a significant contribution to the community
  • Patron of the Festival for 2009 - a word from the patron of the festival
  • Festival closure with Lift Off 09 Youth Performer competition (3pm)
  • Lift Off 09 youth performance winners announcement - Announcing the winner of the completion and recording contract approx 6pm at the end of the day
