YMCA of Canberra
YMCA of Canberra is a not-for-profit, charitable organisation providing programs and services ranging from childcare to health and wellness for the whole family. In everything the YMCA does, it aims to build Strong People, Strong Families and Strong Communities. The YMCA of Canberra is proud to be a part of the new government Health and Wellbeing Hub initiative in Chifley, where they have established a new community gym. The community is welcome to drop in to take part in a variety of exercise classes for all ages, bring the children to Paint and Play in the park or enrol children in YMCA school holiday programs.

Tai Chi: The YMCA has received ACT Health Promotion Funding for the development of Tai Chi for Health and Falls Prevention programs. Dr. Paul Lam has studied Tai Chi for falls prevention and shown that a Tai Chi program can reduce the risk of falls in older adults through the development of lower body strength, improved range of movement, balance and improved body weight transfer skills. The YMCA is delivering Tai Chi for Health and Falls prevention from the newly designated Chifley Health and Wellbeing Hub (former Melrose Primary School). The YMCA will offer a Free Tai Chi Demonstration class at the festival.

Belly Dancing

With a mission to “mesmerise their eyes, touch their souls and leave them longing for more!”

Bellyup Bellydance is a Middle Eastern performance troupe based in Canberra ACT. “We formed our troupe from dancers wishing to develop and maintain their skills, technique and fitness in a fun and friendly atmosphere and to share this experience with others.” They aim to encourage women to be comfortable with themselves and their body by providing a forum where they can uniquely express their inner passions through the wonder of bellydance.

Unsung heroes – Sponsored by Rotary Club of Woden Daybreak, the Unsung Heroes awards are recognition of individuals, groups, schools and organisations or businesses that have made a significant contribution to life in the Woden Valley.

Woden What? Competition in the local community to come up with the name for the 2009 community festival. Drop your idea into the suggestion box, located at the Festival Information Stall

Woden When? Woden is changing and we would love to hear your ideas on your vision of a Woden of the future. Drop your ideas into the suggestion box, located at the history display.

Lady of the Lake – In an effort to address the lack of water in the Woden Valley (we are the only major town centre without a lake!) We have asked Viola Kalokerinos to serve as our Lady of the Lake! We would like to applaud Viola as she has made a fantastic contribution to life in the Woden Valley as owner of the Curtin Milk Bar and Pizza for the past 37 years. Recently Viola sold the business to a long term employee who she says “is just like family”

Patron of the 2008 Festival – As a daughter of the Eddison family, Pam Yonge has lived in the Woden Valley for many years. We are excited that Pam has agreed to be the patron of the Woden Valley Community Festival as she is a fantastic link to the past and present of life in the Woden Valley.
