Volunteers at Woden Community Service

WCS volunteers play a vital role in the provision of services. They are involved in many of the programs, working in partnership with staff to support people in the local community. It is through their involvement that WCS is able to run a true community service.

Current volunteer opportunities include:

Community Transport
Driving people who are frail, ill or have a disability to and from medical and social appointments.

Assistance with Shopping
Assisting with transport, shopping and general tasks such as banking, paying bills. Sometimes a volunteer will do these tasks for a person unable to leave home.

Companionship Visiting
Regular social visits to people who are isolated, lonely or who have no family or carers.

Group Support
Assisting with work involved with running Respite Groups. This can include meal preparation, cleaning up and helping plan and run group activities.

Disability Support Assistance
Working with a trained support worker to assist people with disabilities to participate in community activities. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 3 hours per week for 3 months.

Personal Helpers and Mentors
Supporting people whose lives have been seriously impacted by mental illness by helping them to be involved in a community activity and building some daily living skills.

Youth Centre Cafe
Serving customers at the Woden Youth Centre Cafe and being a friendly listener.

Childcare Assistance
Supporting trained childcare workers to provide quality care for children in Lollipop Children’s Centre.

Other Activities
Volunteering can take many forms and should match your interests. Your level of commitment should match your ability to be involved and your reasons for volunteering. Please note that all volunteers are required to undergo a Police Check. Training and supervision are provided for all volunteers.

How much time do volunteers to work each week?
Usually , volunteers commit 1-3 hours of their time on a weekly basis, but again this depends on the needs of the service user and the availability of the volunteer.

Volunteers are expected to commit for an initial period of 3 months to allow for some continuity of our service.

Interested?
Becoming a volunteer can be a very enjoyable and satisfying, but to get the most out of your volunteering experience, you should consider:

• Why do you want to volunteer; what do you expect to get out of it?
• What type of work are you interest in?
• How much time do you want to commit to your volunteer work?

This will help us to place you in a volunteer position that will best match your interests and availability.

New volunteers are always welcome.

If you have an idea about how you would like to be involved … then we would love to hear from you.
