How to become a great Home Support Worker

RosannaWhat does a home support worker do and what does this role entail?

We spoke to Rosanna who has been a home support worker with WCS since May 2016 and is enjoying the flexible working hours the role offers as a mother and part-time student.

Here's what she has to say:

"I go out and meet with the Clients, feeling confident and secure that I am supported by the team at WCS.  The tight-knit team has, many times, demonstrated that while I look after the clients, they are also looking out for me."

I feel valued, not just as an employee, but as an individual.  The organisation and team appreciate and respect the different responsibilities I have as a single-mother and part-time student.  WCS is firmly committed to balancing both the unique needs of the client as well as its support workers.

It is rewarding for me to be working with my clients, older Canberrans - who need assistance with light cleaning and shopping. While my role provides obvious, physical support for them, our working relationships have gradually grown into camaraderie and friendship.

My role evolves as well, into that of providing emotional and social support through our simple interactions. It's a privilege to be able to provide support to my clients, knowing that I can give more than what my role asks; and it is heart-warming to see and feel their appreciation of the help and companionship."
