Celebrating 50 years of service

Woden Community Service is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

In March, our years of service to the Canberra community were recognised by the ACT Government at the CBR Gold Awards ceremony.

The Chief Minister's Canberra Gold Award recognises the unique contribution made by individuals and groups who have chosen to make a long-term commitment to the ACT.

Through this award, the ACT Government celebrates this dedication by honouring individuals and groups who have resided or operated in the ACT for fifty years or more.

Brian Pearce, one of our longest serving staff members who is about to retire, and Jennie Seppings, former Director of Corporate Support, went along to the ceremony to receive the award from ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr. Brian Pearce Jennie Seppings CBRAwards

Brian first started working for WCS 30 years ago running the after school care program at Garran Primary School. He initially joined for a six month job, but loved it so much he stayed and has found WCS to be a great organisation to work for.

Reflecting on our 50 year anniversary Brian recalled what it was like:

“When I first started, the afters program had under 10 children enrolled and we used to bus them to a central location for care. When we moved the program to the school we started with 33 children and today we have over 120 children in the program each day,” said Brian.

“During this time there has been massive changes in how we deliver school aged care.

“The whole organisation has evolved from being very laid back to becoming a lot more professional these days,” explained Brian.

“Through all of this, we have built a good reputation over many years of providing a good service in connection with our community,” said Brian.

If you have had a long association with the WCS, or were somehow connected to the WCS in the late 60s, 70s and 80s, we would love to hear from you.

We will be collecting and sharing people’s stories from the early years at Recollections: 50 years of service, an afternoon tea from 2-4pm on Tuesday 30 July, 2019 at the Pearce Community Centre. Please RSVP for a ticket here: https://wcs_celebrating_50_years.eventbrite.com.au
