Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy. The Tent Embassy is a symbol of Aboriginal protest against successive governments and their approach to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander affairs.
In 1995 the embassy itself was listed on the Register of the National Estate; the only site on the register noted as important due to its political significance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The Aboriginal Tent Embassy is a significant place for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to continue fighting for sovereignty over the Australian land and an acknowledgement of the history of Australia’s longest-living culture.
