WCS’s Lollipop Early Learning Centre (ELC) acknowledges the traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their history, culture, and achievements.
To celebrate their culture, children at Lollipop ELC participated in an annual week-long celebration of national #NAIDOCWeek2022 from 3 to 10 July. For the entire week, the little ones participated in reading Aboriginal dream-time books, singing Aboriginal songs and creating Aboriginal art.
Lollipop ELC encourages the use of natural materials and assists children to weave in conversations about the environment, as well as support them to become environmentally responsible.
We sat in circles and yarn with the children, shared the dream time stories like the rainbow serpent, and how the birds got their colours and brought the artwork and dot paintings to the children’s attention. We talked about the artwork as a culturally traditional way of telling stories, and the dots as a technique used in the artwork.
Celebrating NAIDOC Week was a great opportunity to embed cultural competence within our centre.
