The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, which is observed every 4 August, is a time for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities to celebrate the strength and culture of our children. All Australians had the opportunity to show their support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
This year’s theme is asking our children what dreaming means to them, learning how they interpret this in their lives and identity, and hearing what their aspirations are for the future.
Across the Lyons Early Learning Centre, including Lyons OSHC, we celebrated #ChildrensDay by reading dream time stories, making friendship bracelets, creating hand prints, and decorating a headdress.
Amy, the room leader of Tathra’s classroom, read the story ‘Sisi and the Cassowary’, which is about a child named Sisi who escapes the watchful eyes of her elders and dives into a waterhole. She surfaces in an unfamiliar place and gets lost. A boy who is out collecting quandong fruit offers to lead her home. He disappears, but a cassowary encourages Sisi to climb on his back and then carries her home.
Our little ones definitely enjoyed learning more about the culture and decorating their headdresses.
